WOYZECK to hit Access Theater this May!

Aporia Theater is proud to announce our new translation / adaptation of WOYZECK will premiere at Access Theater (http://www.accesstheater.com/accesstheater/) May 17-27. This re-discovered German classic will be directed by Artistic Director Sarah Elizabeth Wansley and feature an original score by David Marenberg. Set Design by Liz Blessing, Lights by Carl Wiemann and Sound by Ben Kamine will create a deeply immersive experience for the audience. Performances Thurs-Sun @ 8pm and Saturday also @ 10pm. We’re Seeking a Producer!

Aporia is seeking a Managing Director/Producer for our upcoming season!

We’re looking for an up-and-coming theater management professional or graduate student to serve as a financial and administrative leader for the company, working closely with Artistic Director and core company members. Responsibilities include budgeting, general accounting, managing company members and interns on producing tasks, strategic planning, collaborating on season planning, working with Development Manager on fundraising events and campaigns, and attending company meetings.

Some experience with arts management and/or producing required. Great opportunity for advancing management and producing skills and playing a leadership role in an exciting and collaborative young company. This is a volunteer position with potential for growth with the company.

Aporia Retreats!

Aporia Theater started the new year off right with a 3-day company retreat in Fairfax, Virginia. Each day began with an excursion into our beautiful surroundings (a walk at Burke Lake park, a wood chopping lesson) and continued with a full day of rehearsal at the Workhouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia. The retreat focused on developing expressionistic movement for our upcoming production of WOYZECK (by Georg Buchner, translated and adapted by Artistic Director Sarah Wansley) using a variety of improvisational movement techniques. The company enjoyed having some time and space outside the city to explore new methods of working and develop an ensemble with some new members.

Special thanks to the Wansley and Barrett families for generously hosting dinners and putting us up for the night!

Aporia to Produce World Premiere @ The Flea Theater

Auditions for Summer Shakespeare Project

Aporia is holding auditions June 3 for some fun Shakespeare in the Park on June 26-27! June 26th we have a permit to perform in Central Park at 2 and 4pm, June 27th we’re in process of obtaining a permit for Prospect Park…or we might just wing it

The deal: 5 scenes, 4 directors, no tech, great parts! Part show, part street performance, part picnic, we’re designing this project to be flexible and low stress while still upholding Aporia’s insistence on artistic excellence. Time commitment will depend on which role / scene you are cast in. Rehearsals will be evenings and weekends in June, mostly outside. No pay but great way to get involved with an active company.

Romeo & Juliet 1.1, 12th Night 2.4, Richard II 2.4, Hamlet 3.1 & Henry V 4.3

Swillable Ink Playwright Selected for NYC Fringe

Shout out to one of Aporia’s own, Asa Merritt, whose play “Art of Attack” was selected to participate in the NY International Fringe Festival this summer!! Asa is a member of our writing group, Swillable Ink, and Aporia presented a reading of “Art of Attack” as part of the inaugural Will Work for Art. We’re very excited to have been part of this fascinating play’s development and can’t wait to see it play in the Fringe this summer.
